At Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem (UJEP), sustainability is evolving from a commitment into concrete action. The university has successfully concluded a series of five participatory workshops focused on integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into the core of the institution. Led by UJEP's Sustainability Manager, Dr. Dana Kapitulčinová, and supported by external facilitators, representatives from the Rectorate, faculties, and the Academic Senate collaborated to identify key priorities for the upcoming UJEP Sustainability Strategy 2026–2030.

UJEP's strategic approach is built upon five pillars:

  • Education: Enhancing sustainability within teaching and study processes.
  • Science & Innovation: Connecting excellent research with responsible development.
  • Operations: Optimizing energy management, waste reduction, and sustainable mobility.
  • External Relations: Strengthening our role as a socially responsible regional leader.
  • Administration & Development: Advancing digitalization and well-being of our community.

Preparing a comprehensive ESG analysis
Alongside these community discussions, UJEP is finalizing their first comprehensive Analytical Report: ESG at UJEP 2025. This report provides a systematic map of the institution's performance across the three ESG pillars. The findings indicate a strong foundation in the Social pillar (anchored by UJEP's HR Award and ombuds-person system) while highlighting a critical need for growth in the Environmental pillar – specifically regarding Scope 1, 2, and 3 emission data management. The report serves as a foundational document for UJEP's 2026–2030 Sustainability Strategy, to transition from project-based initiatives to integrated strategic management.

What’s next?
Following the successful completion of a community-wide sustainability survey, UJEP is moving into the evaluation phase. They also plan a workshop for the university community and external partners on 28 April 2026, where they will discuss the survey results, present the initial analytical findings, and facilitate a dialogue with faculty sustainability coordinators. UJEP appreciates the involvement of all individuals who contributed to this vital process so far and is committed to ensuring that the future path is data-driven, actionable, and aligned with the highest standards of transparency. The UJEP Sustainability Strategy 2026–2030 should be finalised by end of June 2026. UJEP is keen to learn and exchange best practice with other European universities!
